Hawesville, KY, folks had discovered working in the coal mines could be dangerous. Evidently around the first of June, JOHN's arm was broken in a mining accident, and he had the fractured bone set by a 35-year-old physician, Dr. Green Sterett. With his arm so afflicted, JOHN would be attended during an extended recovery period by his affectionate wife and by his caring brother Magnus. Another supportive younger brother, Andrew, was also helpful in the TAYLOR household. During convalescence, the disabled blacksmith departed from Hawesville to temporarily scout better work opportunities as Magnus assisted and looked out for him while he healed. During his travels, JOHN once stopped to dine at a restaurant accompanied by a charismatic younger brother whose charm soon captivated their attentive waitress. The smitten female favored the younger Taylor by bringing him a hearty serving of soup. By comparison, the meager allotment presented to JOHN contained too much plain broth and was deficient in other ingredients. The uncompromising JOHN beheld his own sub-standard portion and pointedly advised the young lady: "I'll take a little of the thick as well as the thin." |
