Several weeks after leaving Scotland, Andrew Taylor had not yet reached any of his brothers when the traveling funds his father gave him ran out; but along with his teenage cousin, Robert K. Taylor from Smogro, he had gotten himself all the way to Montreal, Canada. Robert K. busied himself down at the wharf on the St. Lawrence River, unloading a ship to earn some income. But Andrew could find no Canadian clothing maker in need of an apprentice, so the youngster worked at whatever he could find, which included a week of late spring gardening in mid-June. However, the young Scottish tailor named Taylor knew whom his real benefactors were: three of his brothers in America had been giving financial assistance to their father in Orphir. In late June, Andrew sent word to his brother JOHN at Hawesville, requesting money for transportation from Canada down to Kentucky. |
