Martha Cook's dream  (1870)

First sunlight of an Illinois morning slowly illuminated the main bedroom in the Cook household, and an unsettled Martha awakened to begin the normal daytime routine.  Again her slumber had been invaded by the repeated dreams about the TAYLORS.  This time she recalled her disappointment at being snubbed on a sleepytime fantasy visit to these dear friends in Nebraska.  The make-believe dispassion of the entire family almost brought her to tears.

In the vivid unreal drama, Martha's emotions felt the sensitive hurt of being coldly ignored, due to the imagined aloofness of her good friend MARY.  Instead of awarding Martha an expected warm cheerful welcome, the dreamland MARY had busied herself preparing a white dress for her youngster's outing.  Sometime later, a wide-awake Martha wondered whether the indifferent MARY's portrayal of remoteness in the fictitious unworldly episode were some intuitive example of a prophetic omen.
