---The Blacksmith and his Brides---- JOHN TAYLOR was born at Orphir in the Orkney Isles of Scotland during 1826, and first came to America in 1848. He was widowed in 1870, and remarried two years later. MARY WISHART was born in Banffshire, Scotland, during 1831, married John in 1850, and came to America immediately after their wedding. NANCY KERNS was born in Pennsylvania during 1841, came to Nebraska as a soldier's widow after the Civil War, and married John in 1872. ---John's Parents and Siblings-------- ROBERT TAYLOR (senior) was a farmer. John's father was born in 1796 and died in 1858, having spent his entire life in the Orkneys. He was twice married. BARBARA HAY was born in Orkney during 1802 and died in the year 1844. Barbara and Robert had six other children in addition to their third son, John. JAMES TAYLOR was John's eldest brother. He married Mary Robertson in Orphir, and came to the U. S. in 1846. ROBERT TAYLOR (junior) was John's other elder brother. Robert came to the U. S. in 1850 and married Isabelle Robertson in Pennsylvania. MAGNUS FRANCIS TAYLOR was one of John's younger brothers. Magnus accompanied John and Mary to America in 1850, and worked in the coal mines. WILLIAM TAYLOR was another of John's younger brothers. William came to Kentucky probably in 1853, and was soon wed to Maryan. ANDREW TAYLOR was John's youngest brother. Andrew came to North America as a 17-year-old tailor's apprentice. He married Elizabeth Edwards and finally resided in Pawnee county, NE. MARY TAYLOR was John's sister. Mary was the youngest child of Barbara (Hay) Taylor, and evidently she remained in Orkney. For many years after her father's death, Mary lived with her step-mother and her half-sister. ROBINA TAYLOR was John's half-sister, born to Robert's second wife, Elspeth (Sclater). Robina remained in Orkney. She married John Hay and resided at Myre with her husband and her mother "Betsy." Ever since Robina's birth, mother continued to live with her daughter. ---Mary's Parents and Siblings-------- WILLIAM LINDSAY WISHART (senior) was born in Scotland during 1801, and died there in 1880. Mary's father worked as a miller most of his life. ELIZABETH E. BARCLAY was Mary's mother. Elizabeth was born in Scotland during 1797, and died there in 1872. Reverend JAMES BARCLAY WISHART was Mary's eldest brother. James was born at Aberdeen, Scotland, and later married Margaret Dunnet. James was the minister who officiated his sister Mary's wedding ceremony in Kirkwall. He moved his family to England several years later. ELIZABETH WISHART was Mary's eldest sister, who worked as a seamstress. She married James Doward and spent her entire life in Scotland. JOSEPH WISHART worked in a bleach field and a linen mill in Scotland, and later moved his family to South Africa. THOMAS WISHART lived around Aberdeen, Scotland, most of his adult life. He was married twice and had at least seven sons and a daughter. WILLIAM L. WISHART (junior) immigrated to America and worked in the coal mines of Kentucky and Illinois. JOHN MURKER WISHART stayed in Scotland and worked in his father's mill for several years. He was married to Mary Kinnear. DAVID WISHART moved his family to America and was successful as a stonemason. He was married to Jane Thomson. They lived in Nebraska, Kansas, and Oregon. MARGARET SHEPHERD WISHART worked as a seamstress, and taught the craft to inmates of Sunnyside Asylum mental institution at Montrose, Scotland. She later married George Miller and came with her husband and sons to Pawnee county, NE. HELEN SLATER WISHART married William Andrew in Scotland. She and her husband later came to Pawnee county, NE, before moving to Marshall county, KS. ---Nancy's Parents and Siblings------ NICHOLAS KERNS was Nancy's father, born in Pennsylvania. Nicholas brought part of his family to Nebraska after the Civil War. SARAH WARD was Nancy's mother. She was also born in Pennsylvania. MARGARET KERNS was Nancy's eldest sister. She was born near Union Town, PA, in the mid-1830's. MARY B. KERNS was born about 1837 near Fayette City, PA. Her husband, Reynolds Fox, died in the Civil War. She studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and became Doctor Mary Fox before moving to Nebraska. JOHN KERNS was born around 1840 near Fayette City, PA. WILLIAM HENRY KERNS was born about 1844 in Fulton county, IL, and was later known as Henry. GEORGE D. KERNS was born about 1846 in Fulton county, IL. SIMEON B. KERNS was born during 1849 in Fulton county, IL., and was sometimes called Sim. SALLIE E. KERNS was born about 1851 at Sligo, Clarion county, PA. WESLEY N. KERNS was born about 1854 at Sligo, PA, and was known as Wess. THOMAS C. KERNS was born in 1857 at Sligo, PA, and was called Tommy. ---John and Mary's Children-------------- WILLIAM LINDSAY TAYLOR was born in Pennsylvania, the eldest child of John and Mary Taylor. ROBENA R. TAYLOR was John and Mary's second child, their first daughter. She died at ten months of age in Hawesville, KY. MARY HELEN TAYLOR was born in Hawesville, KY, and died in Pawnee County, NE, as a young adult. AGNES FRANCES TAYLOR was born at Hawesville, KY, and named after a beloved deceased uncle. She later married Nicholas Craig in Pawnee county, NE, and died at an early age. ROBERT WISHART TAYLOR was born in Hawesville, KY, and later inherited the family farm in Pawnee county, NE, after his father's death. Rob married a schoolteacher, Harriet Elizabeth Carmichael of Table Rock, NE. ELIZABETH TAYLOR was born during the Civil War at Hawesville, KY. Lizzie married Arthur Johnston just months before her father's death. EMMA JANE TAYLOR was born in Nebraska right after the Civil War and died as a small child in her one-room farm home, likely the same place where she was born. JOHN THOMAS TAYLOR was the youngest of Mary Wishart Taylor's children. He was born in Pawnee county, NE, and later married Mary Iva Shaffer. ---Nancy and Decatur Wyman's Children- GEORGE W. WYMAN was the first child of Decatur and Nancy Kerns Wyman. His father served in a Pennsylvania brigade and died as a Civil War prisoner in 1862. WILLIAM D. WYMAN was Nancy's second child, born in Pennsylvania. FRANKLIN REYNOLDS WYMAN was Nancy's third child, also born in Pennsylvania like his older brothers. Frank later married Anna, and lived in California and Nebraska. ---John and Nancy's Children------------ EDMOND DALLAS TAYLOR was the first child of John and Nancy's marriage. Ed was born in Pawnee county, NE, and later married Avis Dopp. HATTIE HAY TAYLOR was Nancy's only daughter. Hattie was born in Pawnee county, NE, and later married Everette Pangburn. |
